How to Read a Peptide Certificate of Analysis (COA)

Learn how to read a peptide COA: HPLC purity, chromatograms, mass spectrometry identity and lot numbers. A guide for Canadian researchers.

What a COA is

A Certificate of Analysis is a lab report that documents testing performed on a specific production lot of a compound. For research peptides, it shows what was tested, which methods were used and the results for that batch.

Every peptide sold by Alpha Peptides comes with a COA from Prism Labs, an independent Canadian testing lab, so researchers can verify the material before use.

HPLC purity and the chromatogram

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separates the components of a sample. The chromatogram is the graph it produces: the large main peak represents the target peptide and smaller peaks represent impurities.

Purity is calculated as the area of the main peak relative to the total area of all peaks. A result of 99% means the main peak makes up 99% of the detected signal.

Mass spectrometry confirms identity

HPLC shows how pure a sample is, but not what it is. Mass spectrometry measures molecular mass, which is compared with the theoretical mass of the expected sequence to confirm identity.

Match the lot number

A COA only applies to the lot it was issued for. Always check that the lot number on your vial label matches the lot number on the certificate. You can look up lots on our Certificates of Analysis page.

Frequently asked questions

What purity should a research peptide COA show?

Research-grade peptides are commonly specified at 98% or higher by HPLC. Alpha Peptides products are tested to 99%+ purity.

Who tests Alpha Peptides products?

Prism Labs, an independent Canadian laboratory, performs HPLC and mass spectrometry testing and issues the COAs.

Why does the lot number matter?

Each COA covers one production lot. Matching the lot number confirms the report applies to the vial you received.
